The build up had been crazy,Hollow Da Don claimed his battle with Joe Budden would be rigged, animosity was spilling over in interviews as the Internets scrambled to either subscribe to the Pay Per View or find that mythical perfect stream online.
I hadn’t bothered at first as I knew this event would never live up to the hype.
But all night I was seeing the excitement build on Facebook and Twitter and by the time I read the words Daylyt and Spawn suit I knew I had to be a part of this, frantically trying to sign up with my credit card in hand but the site kept giving me an error message, plan B was to check with the many battle fans I know online and eventually found a link to a U Stream video quickly,by this time Lux and Mook was nearly over and I was amazed at how subdued the crowd was.
I couldn’t help feeling that the organisers should of got someone like Eurgh from Don’t Flop or Organik of KOTD to help them with this, battle league owners who have put on successful events before because as the event progressed the problems seemed to increase.
The Mook and Lux battle ended with many fans agreeing that the favourite Lux had been demolished.
Hot 97’s own Ebro was a judge and after the battle he apologises for shitting on the Battle Rap scene,he then proceeded to talk more about the battlers fashion than their actual rapping but he can be forgiven for this as Hot 97 has the same problem as they usually get hip hop music mixed up with pop music every single day.
The host Sway did a great job of promoting all his friends, following Ebro’s trend of ignoring what we were actually here for,but at least we know he’s made friends with loads of people during his career on radio.
Next up was the one we were waiting for, Hollow Da Don Vs. Joe Budden, this battle has already polarized fans as some think Buddens was bodied and others think he took it easily,it seems it depends whether you were a fan of Joey to begin with on what camp you fall in.
There was issues with Hollow having no mic and then there was issues with the sound levels but at least they were thoughtful enough to have a soundcheck before every round because that didn’t look amateur at all,did it?
In the first round Hollow wasn’t great but had a nice scheme about Jodeci/Joe to see/112 that was one of the best in an average round, Hollow also seemed to be battling Shady Records and Total Slaughter just as much as he was Budden,a theme that would recur all through the battle.
In Buddens first round he delivered his lines better than Hollow but his content wasn’t as good although he said some good shit about the battle being a favour to Hollow. Budden also said he was making another bitch famous which was pretty funny, all in all it was a close round.
In the second round Hollow had a sick reference to holding Joe for Ransom and anyone that follows Joes various beefs will have got this line but the crowd seemed to sleep on it a bit.
Now in Joes second round he seemed to choke but covered it up with some crowd interaction but the best was yet to come in the third round, Hollow got really personal, lines about Gloria Velez and Joes sexuality and then he went in on Buddens Mother, the cracks started to appear in Joe,an artist known for wearing his heart on his sleeve.
Joe started his round and managed to turn a crowd that had his back all battle firmly against him like only Joey Buddens could,at one point saying “If you keep booing me im gonna stop rapping” at which point even the guy streaming the event even joined in the boos,Budden eventually dropped the mic in disgust,he didn’t quiet bring out Canibus notebook but this was still amazing.
If Budden had been winning at this stage which is highly debatable this buffoonery ended his hopes of a win.
Hollow was rightly crowned champion in an event that was never going to live up to the hype,a lot if it was more painful than the day I spent listening to the Slaughterhouse debut album in an attempt to review it but there was many controversial talking points that will last for days if not weeks.
The fan who was streaming the event to all of us leeches actually said he wanted a refund, not the full $20 but they definitely owed him $12.
It will be interesting to see where Total Slaughter goes next, shoutout to Eminem though because his company was the real winner and it’s no surprise that he made sure he was on tour in the UK and far away from this debacle.
Let us know what you think in the comments and did Hollow deserve the win or was Joey robbed?
